Teardown · Bondi Sands · 8 November 2026
A strong cart and checkout let down by a first screen buried under two pop-ups, and a product page whose phone view shows the price but not the product's name or its 173 reviews
Bondi Sands does the money end of the store well. A sticky price and Add to Bag bar follows the shopper down the product page, the bag drawer shows exactly how far they are from free shipping ("You are $42.05 away") with a free sample as a second reward, the product page offers a 15%-off SPF bundle, and checkout has Shop Pay, PayPal and Google Pay up top with the marketing box left unticked. The leaks come earlier. A new visitor's first screen on a phone is an email pop-up with a cookie banner stacked on top of it. On the Face SPF 50+ page, the first screen shows the tube and the price, but the name only appears cut off in the breadcrumb and the 4.2-star rating isn't visible. The description is cut off behind "READ MORE", and the bag drawer suggests a tanning lotion to someone buying sunscreen. We reviewed bondisands.com.au as a first-time visitor on an iPhone-sized screen and a laptop on 6 November 2026, using Face SPF 50+ Everyday Sunscreen Lotion (75ml, $16.95) as the test product.

What's already working
- The bag drawer shows a free-shipping progress bar with the exact gap ("You are $42.05 away from free shipping") and a free sample as a second reward, which gives shoppers a reason to add one more item.
- A sticky bar with the price and ADD TO BAG stays on screen as shoppers scroll the product page on a phone.
- "Buy me in a bundle" offers the Suncare Essentials SPF Bundle at $51.95 (was $61.70) with a clear SAVE 15% tag and one-tap upgrade.
- The reviews section shows the full star breakdown (117 five-star, 22 one-star) rather than hiding the low ratings, which makes the 4.2 average more believable.
- Checkout offers Shop Pay, PayPal and Google Pay as express options, and the Club Bondi email box is left unticked.
Fix these, in this order

Don't stack the email pop-up and the cookie banner on the first screen
On a phone, the first thing a new visitor sees is a blue email pop-up covering the hero, with the cookie banner (ACCEPT ALL, REJECT ALL, COOKIE SETTINGS) covering the bottom half of that. Not one product, price or headline is visible. Shoppers arriving from an ad for a specific tan have to close two things before they see anything, and many leave instead.
Let the cookie banner show alone first. In the pop-up app's settings, set the email pop-up to appear only after the cookie choice is made and after the shopper has scrolled or spent 15–20 seconds on the site, and never on the first page view from a paid ad. On phones, use a bottom slide-in instead of a full-screen panel.02Product page · 1–2 hours
Show the product name and star rating on the first phone screen
The first screen of the Face SPF 50+ page shows the breadcrumb (with the name cut off at "EVERYDAY SUNSCREEN LC"), a large image and the sticky price bar. The full product name and the 4.2-star, 173-review rating come later. A shopper checking whether this is the face SPF or the body one, and whether people like it, has to scroll to find out.
In the product template, move the title and the review stars block above the image gallery on mobile, or overlay them on the first image. Shorten the breadcrumb on mobile to "Home / Sunscreen" so it doesn't truncate.03Product page · 30 minutes
Show the full description instead of cutting it off at "READ MORE"
The description stops mid-sentence: "This lightweight,... READ MORE". The useful claims (invisible, suitable for sensitive skin, no added fragrance, non-comedogenic) are there as short tags, but anyone deciding whether a face sunscreen will break them out or sting their eyes wants the detail, and a cut-off sentence hides it.
Show the first two to three sentences in full, ending at a full stop, and put the rest behind "Read more". In the theme, that usually means raising the description's truncation limit or replacing it with a short summary metafield.04Product page · 1 hour
Recommend sun products in the bag drawer when the bag has sunscreen in it
After adding the Face SPF 50+, the drawer's "COMPLETE YOUR GLOW" row suggested Skin Firming Gradual Tanning Lotion. A sunscreen shopper $42 short of free shipping is far more likely to add the body SPF, the SPF lip balm or the SPF bundle the product page already promotes.
The drawer appears to use Rebuy. Add a rule so that when the bag holds a Suncare product, the drawer shows Suncare products first (Coconut Lip Balm SPF 50+ at $6.95 and SPF 50+ Everyday Sunscreen Lotion at $16.95 both close part of the gap), and falls back to best sellers otherwise.05Trust and checkout · 1 hour
Put the free-shipping progress on the cart page too, and finish the cut-off sentence
The drawer tells shoppers how far they are from free shipping, but the full cart page doesn't: it shows the subtotal, CHECKOUT and an FAQ intro that stops mid-sentence ("Visit our Customer Support Hub for additional"). Shoppers who land on the cart page lose the nudge that works in the drawer. The Afterpay line also says $4.23 here and $4.24 in the drawer.
Add the same free-shipping bar block to the cart page template above the subtotal. Edit the FAQ intro so it ends with "…for more help." and check both Afterpay messages use the same widget so the instalment amount matches.06Trust and checkout · 15 minutes
Rewrite the newsletter text under the checkout email field
Under the email field there's the unticked Club Bondi box, then a four-line paragraph in Title Case ("Sign Up To Club Bondi Rewards To Receive Our Email Newsletter…"). It repeats the checkbox, pushes the delivery form down on a phone, and reads like legal fine print at the moment you want shoppers moving fast.
In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Checkout and edit the marketing text in checkout language settings, or remove the extra text block if it comes from a checkout app. Use one short line with the benefit and a privacy link (see the rewrite below).07Search basics · 20 minutes
Fix the home page title and add a share image
The home page title, "Bondi Sands | Self Tanning & Suncare – Bondi Sands Australia", uses the brand name twice and runs to 70 characters, so Google cuts it off. Links to the site show no image when shared in messages or on social, which matters for a brand that's shared this much by creators and fans.
In Online Store → Preferences, set the title to the version in the rewrites below. In the theme editor, open Theme settings → Social media and upload a 1200×630 share image (a product shot on the brand blue).08Speed · Half a day
Load the video and social widgets after the page
The home page loads scripts from 11 outside services, including two from Tolstoy (shoppable video), Rebuy, Shop and the cookie banner. Google's speed test didn't finish when we ran it, so we have no measured numbers, but every one of these competes with the hero image on a phone on mobile data.
Run PageSpeed Insights on the home page. Set the Tolstoy widget to load on scroll or interaction rather than on page load, and remove any app scripts for apps no longer in use (check Settings → Apps and the theme's code for leftovers).

Start with the pop-ups: holding the email form back until after the cookie choice and a first scroll costs nothing and gives every new visitor a clear first screen. Then move the name and rating above the image on product pages, and point the drawer's suggestions at sun products for sunscreen shoppers. The checkout text and cart page fixes are quick and can go out the same day. This is an independent review of Bondi Sands' public online store. We have no connection to Bondi Sands and haven't seen its analytics, so the likely impact of each fix is our judgement from common patterns, not a measured result.
