Shopify speed test
See how fast your store loads on a phone, measured with Google's PageSpeed Insights, plus which outside scripts are adding weight. Free, no sign-up, and you get a fix list.
What it checks
- Google's mobile performance score
- How long until the main image or text appears
- How long scripts block taps while loading
- Whether the layout jumps around
- How many outside services load scripts
- Product page, trust and search basics too
Why mobile speed matters more than desktop
Most Shopify traffic is on phones, often on mobile data, and phones are far slower than the laptop you build your store on. A page that feels instant on your office wifi can take five or ten seconds to show anything on a mid-range phone. Shoppers arriving from social media ads are the least patient of all.
That's why this test measures a mobile visit, the same way Google does when it decides how your pages rank.
What the numbers mean
- Performance score (0–100): Google's overall mobile rating. Above 70 is good for a Shopify store with apps; under 40 is losing visitors.
- Largest Contentful Paint: how long until the biggest thing on screen (usually the hero image) appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
- Total Blocking Time: how long scripts stop the page from responding to taps. Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
- Layout shift: how much the page jumps while loading. Aim for under 0.1.
The usual fixes for a slow Shopify store
- Shrink the hero image to under 200KB, in WebP, and don't lazy-load the first image on the page.
- Replace autoplay hero videos on mobile with a still image, or load the video after the page is ready.
- Remove apps you no longer use. Uninstalling isn't always enough: check the theme for leftover code.
- Load chat widgets, review carousels and pop-ups after the page is interactive, not before.
- Give images fixed sizes so the layout doesn't jump.
