Teardown · Patagonia · 6 November 2026
A product page that sells hard, then a cart that leaves $10 on the table: a $139.95 hoodie lands $10.05 short of free shipping and nothing says so
Patagonia's product page does most things right: the price, sizes, a "5 left" Add to Cart button, Shop Pay and Afterpay all sit on the first scroll, and a strip of promises (free shipping over $150, free returns, a lifetime repair guarantee) sits right under the button. The leaks start after the tap. The cart shows a $10 shipping charge on a $139.95 order, $10.05 under the free-shipping line, with no prompt to close the gap. The cart page's "Estimated Total" leaves that $10 out, two recommendation sections showed up empty, and the new colourway we tested showed empty stars and a review button you can barely read. We reviewed patagonia.com.au as a first-time visitor on an iPhone-sized screen and a laptop on 6 November 2026, using the Men's Capilene® Cool Sun Hoody - Peak Visions as the test product.

What's already working
- Everything needed to buy is on the first scroll of the product page on a phone: price, colour, size buttons, a "5 left - Add to Cart" button, Buy with Shop and the Afterpay split ($34.98 x 4).
- The promise strip under the button (free shipping over $150, free returns and exchanges, Ironclad guarantee with free lifetime repair) answers the main risks before a shopper has to go looking.
- Fit help is unusually good: "Model is 185cm wearing a size medium" on the photos, a size chart in centimetres, and a phone number and chat hours right in the size guide.
- The checkout offers Shop Pay, PayPal and Google Pay before the form, and Afterpay as a payment option.
- The search bar is permanently visible on mobile, which suits a store with a catalogue this deep.

Tell shoppers how close they are to free shipping, in the cart drawer and on the cart page
After adding the $139.95 hoodie, the cart drawer shows "Shipping: $10" and then a large empty space. The shopper is $10.05 away from free shipping and the drawer doesn't say so. Paying $10 for shipping when $10 more of product would make it free feels like a penalty, and some shoppers will leave to think about it instead of checking out. Many of Patagonia's best sellers sit just under $150, so this gap probably comes up often.
Add a free-shipping progress message to the cart drawer and cart page (most cart drawer apps and Shopify themes have a setting for this), e.g. "You're $10.05 from free shipping". Fill the empty space under it with two or three low-priced add-ons that would close the gap: socks, caps, stickers or a care product.02Trust and checkout · 30 minutes
Include the $10 shipping in the cart page's Estimated Total
The cart page's order summary lists "Estimated Shipping $10" and then an "Estimated Total" of $139.95, the same as the subtotal. A shopper who reads the total and then sees $149.95 later in checkout gets a surprise at the worst moment, and unexpected costs are one of the most common reasons people abandon checkout.
In the cart template, add the estimated shipping to the Estimated Total line, or label it "Subtotal before shipping". Better still, pair it with the free-shipping message from the first fix, so the line reads as a choice rather than a cost.03Product page · Half a day
Pool reviews across colourways, and make the empty review button readable
The Peak Visions colourway shows five empty stars and "Write a review" under the product name, and its reviews section is empty, with a "BE THE FIRST TO WRITE A REVIEW" button in white text on light grey that's almost invisible. The plain Men's Capilene® Cool Sun Hoody is sold on the same site at the same $139.95, and it's the same garment in a different print. A shopper deciding on fit and fabric would get the same value from those reviews, but this page shows none.
In the reviews app, group products that share a style number (44939 here) so every colourway shows the combined rating and reviews. Most review apps support this as product grouping. Until there are reviews, hide the empty stars under the title, and give the review button dark text or a dark outline so it passes basic contrast.04Product page · 1 hour
Check why "You May Also Like" and "How About These?" came up empty
On the product page, the "You May Also Like" heading had nothing under it in our capture, and on the cart page "How About These?" sat directly above the footer with no products. These may load late and our scripted visit may not have waited long enough, so treat this as something to check. If shoppers do see empty headings, the page looks unfinished, and the cart misses its best moment to suggest the add-on that unlocks free shipping.
Open both pages on a phone in a private browser tab and wait. If the sections stay empty, check the recommendations app's settings for new products and the cart page. If it can't fill them reliably, hide the heading when there's nothing to show, or hand-pick products as a fallback (for the cart, items under $20).05Speed · Half a day
Remove the script for Google Optimize, a tool Google shut down in 2023, and audit the rest
In Google's mobile test, the home page scored 36 out of 100. The main image took 7.8 seconds to appear on a mid-range phone, and scripts blocked the page for 1.9 seconds while it loaded. Google's real-user data rates the site fast overall, so most visitors are on quick phones and connections, but shoppers on older phones or patchy coverage get a slow, unresponsive first screen. One of the six outside services loading on the home page is googleoptimize.com. Google switched off Optimize in September 2023, so that script can be removed with no downside.
Remove the Google Optimize snippet from the theme or tag manager. Then list every outside script on the home page (search, Klaviyo, Shop app and so on), and load anything not needed for the first screen (chat, reviews, email capture) after the page has loaded. Serve the hero image as WebP at phone width, and don't lazy-load it.06Product page · 30 minutes
Fix the size chart notes, which say inches and give trouser lengths on a hoodie
The size chart shows centimetres, but the note underneath says the measurements "are in inches, unless otherwise noted". It then explains trouser inseam lengths (30, 32, 34) on a hoodie page. A shopper checking their size reads a contradiction right when they're deciding, and "All sizes are US" next to the size buttons adds a conversion step they may not know how to do.
Rewrite the shared size-chart footnote for the Australian site in centimetres, and only show the inseam line on bottoms. If US sizing differs from Australian sizing for some products, say how in one line (e.g. "US sizes run about one size larger than AU"), but only if that's true for your range.07Trust and checkout · 30 minutes
Have billing default to the delivery address, and say up front why phone is required
In our capture, "Use shipping address as billing address" was unticked, so a full second address form (eight more fields) appeared below the card details. The delivery phone number is required too, and the reason ("In case we need to contact you about your order") is hidden behind a small ? icon. Every extra field on a phone is another reason to stop, and most shoppers bill to the address they ship to. The unticked box may come from our scripted visit rather than your settings, so check it yourself.
In Shopify's checkout settings, make sure the billing address defaults to the shipping address. Set the shipping phone to optional unless your couriers need it. If they do, show the reason as visible text under the field rather than behind the icon.

Own one? Tell other buyers how it fits
Start with the free-shipping message in the cart drawer: it's usually a settings change, and on a $139.95 product it targets a gap of $10.05 that many orders will hit. Fix the Estimated Total at the same time. The review grouping and the script clean-up take longer, but both affect every product page. This is an independent review of Patagonia's public Australian store. We have no connection to Patagonia and haven't seen its analytics, so the likely impact of each fix is our judgement from common patterns, not a measured result.
